For anyone else who has read both books, that’s probably surprising, because it seems like a modern day teenage love story is about the furthest thing from Jane Eyre, but hear me out. In some ways, this book is similar to Jane Eyre. So if you haven’t read that one yet, run away and only come back when you’ve read it. This review does NOT contain spoilers about All the Bright Places, but it does contain spoilers about Jane Eyre. It’s my experience that people are a lot more sympathetic if they can see you hurting, and for the millionth time in my life I wish for measles or smallpox or some other recognizable disease just to make it simple for me and also for them. Indeed, what is even more baffling is how as fine a writer – and reader – as John Burnside could refer to it as “a modern masterpiece”. One reason for persisting with this queasy, gratuitous, extended prologue of a novel is to attempt to discover why anyone would compare it with the work of Shirley Jackson or the great Flannery O’Connor. Just in case the reader forgets the vast sea of time, the narrator frequently repeats ‘back then’ as she tells a story that for all its gross detail and snide asides quickly proves tiresome – and tired. Anyone who hasn’t already read them should really check these out. Both can be bought in a single book, The Crown and Court Duet. These books are not without fault, but they are very well written and set in a comprehensive and elaborately constructed fantasy world. Crown Duel takes place mostly on the rebel front, while Court Duel takes place (surprise, surprise!) at Court. The main character, Countess Meliara of Tlanth, and her brother are fighting to overthrow a bad King. This is a bit of a golden oldie and most fantasy fans have encountered the series. She can fight her own battles, finding her way in a competitive movie sector among her male rivals. For several months, the Prince and the other nobles continue to live happily inside the abbey, while people continue to die from the Red Death outside. There is sufficient food and drink for the Prince's guest and musicians, dancers, actors and clowns to entertain them. After Prince Prospero's guests have arrived, bolts on the abbey's doors are welded shut, making it impossible for anyone to get in or out. He believes that his home, a former abbey which has been converted into a fortress, will provide him with adequate protection from the plague and he invites a large number of knights and ladies to join him there. Those who are infected bleed profusely form their skin, especially their faces, before they die. The Red Death is the name of an infectious disease which cuases people to die within thirty minutes. |
